The "Latvians in the World" project, organised by the Latvian Culture Centre in Birmingham, is well underway, connecting Latvians across the globe.
Each participant in the project has completed a task, creating a unique video clip about themselves, their city, and the Latvian community there. The project kicked off with its first Zoom meeting on August 7, followed by subsequent gatherings on August 14 and August 21. Each meeting includes presentations about four cities and a collective viewing of the videos.
This initiative brings together compatriots from 12 cities including Siena (Italy), Bergen (Norway), Reykjavik (Iceland), Tbilisi (Georgia), San Francisco (USA), Sydney (Australia), Dublin (Ireland), Nova Odesa (Brazil), Cape Town (South Africa), Vejle (Denmark), Birmingham (UK), and Stockholm (Sweden).
The Latvian Cultural Centre in Birmingham, through the "People Help the People" project funded by the Big Lottery Community Fund, is actively supporting efforts to alleviate the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. The "LLL 2020" event, which commenced this year, continues to thrive and grow more vibrant with each new instalment.
Conceived by Dziesma Teteris from Los Angeles (USA) and co-authored by Ingmārs Čaklais, director of Birmingham Little Theatre, this initiative has blossomed into a genuine transnational project. Enthusiastic theatre and drama aficionados, along with creative collectives, have transcended borders in the broadest sense.
Participants from the USA, France, Great Britain, Germany, Belgium, Italy, Norway, Iceland, and of course, Latvia, have contributed to the readings. Esteemed actors such as Guntars Āboliņš, Lelde Vikmane, and Lauris Dzelzītis lent their talent, while mime artist Uģis Točs and Latvian diaspora dance groups from Great Britain also took part.
The Latvian Play Readings 2020 (LLL2020) received a Letter of Appreciation from the World Federation of Free Latvians (PBLA) on November 18, 2020, during Latvia's national holiday.
It's worth noting that all participants, including authors, video technicians, and panellists, contribute voluntarily to this project without financial compensation.
The reading cycle continues! Bring your ideas, bring your plays, and let's create together!
All play readings are available on the YouTube channel: Latvian Play Readings 2020.
